28th May 2013 ... Grey Areas

The unexpected break in the rain couldn't have come at a better time.
Heavily overcast and holding at 10 degrees all night with just the lightest of drizzly rain on occasions.
The Grey moths put in an appearance with Sycamore, Poplar Grey and Grey Dagger (agg)

Another grey area, is separating The Uncertain, The Rustic and Vine's Rustic, moreso around late june when they are all abundant.
The two examples caught last night ( below ) are Vine's Rustic and show a variation in background colour....... but in a couple of weeks time or so Uncertains and Rustics will be heading for a trap near you.

Varied Coronet and Triple-barred Argent (Argyresthia trifasciata) were added to the year list, but the best addition of the night was Chinese Character, which is uncommon in my garden and was not seen last year.

26th May 2013 ... Nice mix

Following a cracking day in Bedfordshire, with the first BBQ of the year (which is one more than last year !), I had high hopes for some good moth species last night.
The big full moon didn't appear over the garden until midnight and it remained quite warm up until then.
Temperatures plummeted to a chilly 4 deg soon after the witching hour but still a good mixed bag was recorded ....
The afternoon found grandson Louie head down in the grass and bushes searching for new species at a £ a time before overeating and coming to a halt, but not before he produced a Dichrorampha species which could be "plumbagana" or "plumbana" and therefore cost me a quid ! Confirmation asap.
A new for year micro was added in the evening in the shape of Eudonia angustea and a Pug or two that need a better look.
Confirmation ... 1276 Dichrorampha plumbagana.

25th May 2013 ,,,, Latest catch

Did a bit of net sweeping on the overgrown front lawn in the sunshine. Lots of young Ox-eye daisy plants with unopened flower heads and 3 large Tansy bushes which probably explains the addition of Dichrorampha acuminatana to the year list, a common moth in my garden, plus a Scalloped Hazel in the large Hebe bush was an unusual find

22nd May 2013 ... A little Sprucie bonus

4 deg and a chilly Nor'wester blowing. coupled with clear skies and a 93% bright waxing moon.
Not the best conditions for the light traps, but I left the traps on in the hope that the wind would drop a little and the pre-dawn flight would be productive when the moon had disappeared.
A dark looking carpet was spotted about 12 feet up on the house wall just after dark, so with a specimen pot, a large pair of steps and a complete disregard for the Health and Safety Executive, I managed to pot it and discovered it to be a Spruce Carpet, thus losing a bet with myself that it was a May Highflyer.
A good bet as I now owe myself a beer.

19th May 2013 ... Best night so far

11 deg all night, and apart from a heavyish shower at 01.00 am, it would have been perfect.
Let's hope for many more "best night so far" nights.
Yesterday, I did a bit of afternoon micro hunting in the front part of the garden, where the north-west border is constantly under attack from my neighbours knee-deep selection of wild grasses and weeds.
This bothers me not one whit as it encourages the local wildlife.
Six species were potted/netted and my Laburnum tree produced Leucoptera laburnella the Laburnum Leaf-miner.  Cochylis dubitana was also added to the year list, a common micro at The Dells.
My prized regulars returned last night for the third year running ... Toadflax Brocade and my female Emperor Moth hatched from its pupa after 3 years, unfortunately the weather hasn't been the best to lure some wild males.

15th May 2013 ... Garden Moth Traps

It was much warmer at dusk last night than the previous couple of nights, with temperatures around 9 deg when I switched on the light traps and then settled down to watch the second half of  Chelsea FC struggling to beat an average Benfica in the Europa cup final
As Chelsea were lifting the trophy in Amsterdam, down came the rain in Biggleswade and I had to quickly cover up the two traps.
It soon passed, and just like the English cricket season, off came the covers again and play resumed.
The sky then cleared and the temperature plummeted to 2 deg C. but not before a few moths were trapped.
Pebble Prominent and Rustic Shoulder-knot were new for the year and at last the Orthosia species were absent. (for now).

12th May 2013 ... Horse Chestnut Leaf-miners ...

If you are one of the few that hasn't seen 366a Cameraria ohridella, the Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner, then now is the time to head for your nearest Horse Chestnut tree where you will need a calculator.
I went to the local Stratton school open day yesterday to buy some plants and check out the working farm that they have run for several years now.
I parked under a "Conker" tree and when I returned to the car it was covered with said moths.
(Below) .... one of hundreds of  Horse Chestnut Leaf-miners on the car.
366a ... Cameraria ohridella ... Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner

PIGLETS at the school farm.... always a hit with the kiddies on open days .....

Despite still having about 30 of the above moths on the car upon arrival at The Dells, none were recorded in and around the garden traps last night, probably because of the chilly wind.
The only new moth for the year was a Nutmeg and I was surprised to see a Small Quaker next to it in the trap, very late.
