19th April '16 - Latest garden moth trap results

Despite the 2.4 deg min temp. and a near full waxing moon there were a few moths about.
Pale Mottled Willow was expected, Nutmeg was another year first and Mullein was a good find.
Another cold snap is heading our way by the weekend and could persist for a few nights but the next two days look promising in the VC30 area.

27th May ... Back from Rhodes, normal mothing resumes

Had a great time in Rhodes at the wedding of our close friends son who we have known since the nappy years.
Did the tourist things, Rhodes old town, Acropolis at Lindos, donkey rides etc but little time for the natural world, although my pics of the Acropolis contained some heavily cropped photo's of a distant breeding pair of Black-eared Wheatears.

The only moth seen on our hotel wall ...
... an Idaea species by the look of it, roughly the size of a Least Carpet or Treble Brown Spot

Arrived home at 11.30 pm last night feeling absolutely cream crackered but flicked on the traps before throwing some zeds.
Got up too late to beat the early birds around the traps but found 15 moths of 13 species within, including 3 species for the garden year list.
1 x Common Swift (year first)
1 x Hofmannophila pseudospretella
1 x Epiphyas postvittana
1 x Aphomia sociella
2 x Garden Carpet
1 x Common Pug
1 x Scalloped Hazel
1 x Poplar Hawk-moth, (year first)

1 x Turnip Moth
1 x Heart and Dart
2 x Shuttle-shaped Dart
1 x Nutmeg, (year first)

1 x Early Grey

Daytime 28th May
3 x Pyrausta aurata
1361, Pyrausta aurata
P. aurata was moth #99 for 2015
Ton up tonight !

14th April 2014 ... Garden traps latest

4 deg C and a full moon on a calm, clear night.
Very poor conditions for a decent catch which was reflected in the total.
Just 15 moths caught, one of which was a daytime micro and 5 others were Early Grey that seem oblivious to bright moons and cool temperatures,
The rest of the catch were recorded in the first hour of darkness before the full moon lit up the garden and the temperature fell.
A Parornix species was potted during the day from the patio door window which is probably "anglicella".
This has been retained for positive ID
Highlight of the Night :-
NUTMEG
2 days late to be an early VC30 record..
Discestra trifolii, ... Nutmeg
The Catch:-

12th May 2013 ... Horse Chestnut Leaf-miners ...

If you are one of the few that hasn't seen 366a Cameraria ohridella, the Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner, then now is the time to head for your nearest Horse Chestnut tree where you will need a calculator.
I went to the local Stratton school open day yesterday to buy some plants and check out the working farm that they have run for several years now.
I parked under a "Conker" tree and when I returned to the car it was covered with said moths.
(Below) .... one of hundreds of  Horse Chestnut Leaf-miners on the car.
366a ... Cameraria ohridella ... Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner

PIGLETS at the school farm.... always a hit with the kiddies on open days .....

Despite still having about 30 of the above moths on the car upon arrival at The Dells, none were recorded in and around the garden traps last night, probably because of the chilly wind.
The only new moth for the year was a Nutmeg and I was surprised to see a Small Quaker next to it in the trap, very late.

21st Aug '12 .. Late summer doldrums

Nothing new in the garden for a few days despite the ideal conditions.
Plenty of brown moths that are starting to look very tired now.
The last 3 nights have seen literally thousands of Water Veneer, Acentria ephemerella, in the traps and hundreds of Horse Chestnut Leaf-miners, Cameraria ohridella.
The wine bet has almost reached "wave the white flag" levels as Capt. Trappings races away with a 15 macro species advantage.
One or two nice moths were recorded that were not so brown, but nothing to speed up the ticker.
Here's a few........

Toadflax Brocade, Calophasia lunula .. a Dells regular and very local.

Argyresthia goedartella

Beautiful Plume, Amblyptilia acanthadactyla

Iron Prominent, Notodonta dromedarius. Unusually well marked

Poplar Hawk-moth, Laothoe populi. 21/08/12 ..  A latecomer

Lesser Swallow Prominent, Pheosia gnoma

Nutmeg, Discestra trifolii
