What is killing my Hawthorn saplings ? plus garden moth species for 4th June

Something is attacking my young Hawthorn trees !
I have never seen the likes of it before, it is like a ball of white, slimy, silky web with a brown end on it.
Has anyone seen or know what this is ?

A warmer, humid night would have been perfect but for the bright near full moon.
To be fair, it is rising quite late in the evening so has no effect on the early flyers.

The warm and windy conditions blew in a garden first Netted Pug which was promptly potted up for a pug mug shot ....

....other Pugs included Lime-speck, Mottled, Common, Grey and a host of others which are beyond my limited Pug expertise.
The micros are slowly trickling in with Bryotropha terrella, Cydia pomonella and Epiblema trimaculana putting in an appearance at last......

Superb weather, and it's good to read the blogs and see the wide variety of catches for a change.
A Bordered White was new to The Dells garden and probably due to the neighbours large Scots Pine two gardens away.
After sorting through the numerous Pugs of the last two nights, a Mottled Pug was a year first of the identifiable ones, with several Commons and what could be a couple of Brindled or Oak-tree...

COULD THIS BE THE END OF THE LONG WINTER ??

Night-time temperatures were much higher last night with a min of 7 deg C which stirred a few moths into action. They look set to be getting warmer over the next week so I am expecting some good returns from the traps at long last..

27 moths of 11 species appeared, with a couple of garden firsts including two pugs pictured above.
