28th May '15 ... 100 species passed ... Micro I.D. required

The 100th garden species for 2015 .... Lime Hawk-moth
B.F.1979, Lime Hawk-moth, Mimas tiliae
100 species is a pleasing landmark for the garden but in reality it is going to be the poorest year for a while and I am already 40 species down on last year.

Can anyone ID this micro before I deliver it to our recorder ?
Wingspan c14mm
Thanks Ben Sale, ... Prays fraxinella, Ash Bud Moth
Confusion species .. Prays ruficeps, Dark Ash Bud Moth
449, Prays fraxinella, Dark form

449 Prays fraxinella, Dark form
It's quite a plain Jane, (or John) and could be a new species for the garden.
Thanks to Bennyboymothman for pointing me in the right direction, I can now eliminate Prays ruficeps so no new species for my garden after all.
The head colour could fit "ruficeps" but the slightly darker area half way down the forewing confirms it as the dark form of "fraxinella". You may have to squint a little.
Also the flight time leans more to Frax than Rufi. which flys July/Aug.
The only reliable way of telling them apart is the vein pattern in particular the hindwing according to our micro recorder, because of the similarity of the genitalia.
This involves brushing off the wing scales, soaking the wings, then checking the vein pattern through a decent microscope.
There is an opportunity of adding a new micro species to the Bedfordshire VC30 micro list as Prays ruficeps remains unrecorded.

The confusion moth:- Prays ruficeps. Information below copied from Norfolkmoths.co.uk
"Originally thought a dark form of Prays fraxinella (Ash Bud Moth). Flying later in the year than fraxinella.

DNA barcoding indicates that P. ruficeps is a species distinct from P. fraxinella. The latter does have a dark form but in it the faint fraxinella markings can still be distinguished.

P. ruficeps has an unremittingly black forewing without any underlying sign of ‘fraxinella-ish’ markings, and a ‘rufi’ ‘ceps’, (Red/Brown Head), though this can vary somewhat in the ‘rufi-ness’ of the ‘ceps’."
[John Langmaid, Aug 2013]

(Accepted as a valid species in the new British list 2013)

June 7th 2013 ... Eyed like some more of these ....

1980 ... Eyed Hawk-moth ... Smerinthus ocellata
Last year I had given up with Eyed Hawk, resigned to "dipping out".
After all, it was early September so no chance.
But, on a chilly October 14th evening, following a warm, sunny day, one appeared on the wall beside the trap.
That was the latest record for Bedfordshire, the previous latest being August 5th.*
The above creature was in the trap this morning and gave me the usual "start" when the egg box was turned to reveal it ....These Hawks are amazing !
At least it was not totally unexpected.
The NE wind had the usual bite to it, and although the thermometer was reading 7 degrees (the same as the night before) it felt much colder and the numbers were considerably lower than the previous night.
Common Swift was also added to the garden year list, which is trailing 2012 by a margin, and 2012 was a bad year !
I think it will pick up very soon, ever optimistic .. if the glass is half empty all the the time, get a bigger bottle!

10th Aug '12 .. garden traps

The dry weather continues but for how long ?
Nice variety in and around the traps and 5 Nutmeg was an all time high count.
Tawny Speckled Pug is another year tick taking the macro species count for the year within sight of the 200 mark, 17 short of the 2011 total on the same date.
That's not too bad considering the appalling weather we endured from the beginning of April through to mid July.

16th May ... The Dells garden traps

Overnight min. temp. a heady 7.1 deg. calm, cloudy

It should have been much better, given the comparatively tropical conditions last night, but the expected full traps turned out to be wishful thinking.
A year first Peppered Moth turned up with a highly probable Oak-tree Pug.
Agonopterix arenella was a year first micro, along with two other micros for ID, one an Agonopterix species and the other a Monopis type or similar.
Traps :-

30th June... Chilly

Another cold June night with temps dropping to 7 degrees. Some interesting moths turned up at various tyraps set in the grounds of the RSPB headquarters at The Lodge, but the cool evening would have inhibited quite a few species no doubt. Captain Trappings and myself ran an MV sheet and a combined Blacklight/actinid skinner on the old Heath and among the Scots Pines.
Checked out the garden moth trap when I arrived home after 2.00 am and again at 6.00 am.
Nothing new and numbers were well down on previous nights.
A second generation EARLY THORN was on the shed wall and..... ... two PEPPERED MOTH were found on the brick/stone walls. Also on the shed was this attractive male BROAD-BORDERED YELLOW UNDERWING ... always look stunning when fresh. The full list for The Lodge will appear shortly, there's a bit of work for our micro recorder to do first with numerous unID'd little brown/black jobs.

Garden totals remain at 296 species...179 macro, 117 micro.
