21st Aug 2013 ... New micros

Scrobipalpa costella, Winter Groundling ? was added to the garden list on a very humid night with a full moon on view during cloud breaks and then rain.
This may have been overlooked in the past as it is quite common nationally and in VC 30
Udea lutealis, Pale Straw Pearl, was also added as a garden first and probably overlooked previously.
Lesser Wax Moth, Achroia grisella, was a year first and only the second record for garden.
Others included Mompha propinquella, Aethes smeathmanniana and 5 x Epermenia chaerophyllella with a mass of Acentria ephemerella (Water Veneer).
Of the macros, Old Lady and 3 x Centre-barred Sallow were the pick of the crop.

20th Aug 2013 ... Rush around before holiday

Off to Italy for a week so just tonight (21st) left for the traps to pull in something exotic.
Last night was quite productive though, Rusty Dot Pearl and Rush Veneer showed up from wherever, and I found Catoptria falsella amongst a myriad of A. geniculea, quite a feat after necking a couple of bottles of good Aussie Red-eye with Captain Trappings earlier. This was only the second garden record of this quite common species.

18th Aug 2013 ... Sallow, end of summer ?

Centre-barred Sallow, a nice splash of colour amongst the fading brown stuff.
I usually associate this moth with summers end, but at least we had one this year and it looks like continuing a while longer.
A noticeable absence this year has been Large Yellow Underwing, not sure if this is a national trend but there is a marked downfall in numbers this season.

14th Aug 2013 .. Worst Red Underwing shot ever

I recorded my "year first" Red Underwing last night and to dispel any doubts I photographed it.....
.... 5 metres high on the house wall, fluttering about.
Torch in one hand, Lumix in the other on full zoom, I grabbed the above quickly taken one-off shot before it took off again.
As it flew from the wall I followed it with the torch hoping the light would lure it down, which it did.. Narrowly avoiding the clutches of a hungry Bat it landed in my neighbours rose bush on the wrong side of the dividing wall and out of sight.
Crap pic, but good enough for another year tick and it doesn't have to sit in a pot in my cold fridge overnight for a mornings photo shoot.

01/08/13 ... Reed Leopard ? Reed Dagger ?? ............

....... No way !
It's 00.30hrs, camera in hand I am trying to get a picture of a small micro moth that is on the wall near the light trap.
As I am about to return to the house to bring up the pictures on screen, I glanced at the trap.
Clinging to the trap supply cable, like a black 230 v  reed stem, was a somewhat confused Reed Warbler ....
It eventually flew off, via the open patio door, doing a circuit of the house, before exiting and flying off into the night.
