Despite the rain and the 20mm of it at the bottom of the 15watt actinic skinner (must put some drainage holes in it !) This Satellite was found sheltering within. A new species for my garden. Tried out my twin 11 watt PL Homebase funnel trap (pictured above) but nothing doing.
This trap is an experiment, made from a homebase plastic storage box with clip-on lid and two 8inch funnels dropped into the lid. Lighting is two 11 watt PL two pin lamps and lampholders. The two ballasts are housed in a small adaptable box which can be seen in the doorway to my garden shed. I like it, but will the moths ? watch this space. (temperature was 4 degrees C and rainy)
The skinner is also pictured, at the top and had its first catch of the year with the obliging Satellite.

A trip to the Lodge produced 8 Winter Moths and this Mottled UmberAn Early Moth found on Matts fence by "Eagle-Eyed Louie Going to put out two traps tonight plus an actinic flourescent to light up the brick wall......A bit on the cold side at 5 degrees but worth a try.

The Caldecote Trap set off like a hare last night, already 6-1 up on The Dells, but this Dark Chestnut pulled it back to 6-2. The odd thing about it was the fact that it was in the trap before the egg boxes were in position and no perspex or lights in place.

18th Jan 2010 The New Year Starts

With the mild spell on Monday night and a slit of a moon behind a cloudy sky, out came the trap and the actinic lights. An unidentified moth homed in on the trap but disappeared into the leaf litter nearby, possibly one of the Chestnuts, but wasnt seen again. But the illuminated brick wall produced a Winter Moth to kickstart the new year.

NEWSFLASH:; Erannis giganticus liarae seen in Beds !!!

BRITAINS FIRST EVER RECORDED Erannis giganticus liarae (the Giant Mottled Umber) has been seen in Bedfordshire !!! It was discovered in the kitchen of Karen & Matt Burgess and was promptly cooked and eaten by Birthday boy Louie and friends !!!!
