9th Aug '12 .. Garden Traps

Another calm, clear, warm night and the moon is waning but still on the bright side.
The late summer lull is here before we slip into autumn although there are the occasional surprises amongst the Rustic types and Underwings.
A year first Canary-shouldered Thorn and a Swallow Prominent brightened up an otherwise dull trap catch.

Over 1,000 moths from 2 skinner traps ?
Yes indeed, and here's the reason why ...........

I decided to count the amount of dead ones in the two traps as I had estimated around 500.

4th Aug 2012... Smoky Wainscot ? Look again ! plus a Dichrorampha pic for ID

Thanks to Captain Trappings (Matt) I was able to spot a site first Southern Wainscot.
He caught one last week and pointed out the differences to me first hand.
I wonder how many Southern's have been logged as Smoky's in the past at The Dells ?
2197 Southern Wainscot, Mythimna straminea ... new for site

Another night with a big bright moon and the difference this makes to moth catches is vast.
Last night I ran two similar traps, both skinners and both actinic/blacklight combos.
One is sited at the end of the garden and cops the big moon all night in its current orbit, the other by the house which is out of moon view.

4th Aug 2011 ... Clearly a new garden species

13.00 pm ... Checking out my tomato and runner bean plants proved to be a good move.
Sitting on a Lemon Balm leaf amongst the beans was a Red-belted Clearwing...
This is the first clearwing I have seen and obviously a new moth for The Dells garden..

379 Red-belted Clearwing
Synanthedon myopaeformis
In situ in garden, on Melissa leaf (Lemon Balm)
