22nd June 2012 .. Ill wind

21st June 2012 ... Poplar Front

Another weather front has arrived with rain and wind after teasing us with a couple of days of seasonal June conditions.
Of the few moths trapped, two were added to the macro tally for the year, Poplar Grey and Heart and Club.

Poplar Grey, Acronicta megacephala

Heart & Club, Agrotis clavis
I have added 4 new micro species to the garden list courtesy of David Manning, Beds. micro recorder, who recently collected lots of little pots from my freezer.
11th May...0290...Caloptilia semifascia
16th May...0449...Prays fraxinella f. rustica (dark form, Ash Bud Moth)
16th May...0682...Depressaria chaerophylli

20th June 2012 ... Garden note... Hebe

Below is a pic of my Hebe bush, Hebe albicans spp.
It is about 10years old and is approx 4ft x 4 ft....

This is covered with bees during the day and I have also noticed  moths feeding on it at night.
Last night was calm, warm and humid, and I found Garden Carpets, Yellow Shell and Pugs feeding at the flowers, or at least attracted by the perfume.
But it's the bees that love it, I have never seen such full pollen bags on bees before.

I think a couple more Hebe's wouldn't go astray in the garden and there are many varieties of this insect friendly plant.....

19th June 2012 ... What bad weather ??

A couple of Kentish Ales, England beat Ukraine and a good mothing night.
My micro tally should be boosted by a few. David (county recorder) & Sylvia (moth widow) Manning popped by for a morning cuppa and took away a few pots for examination.
I'm tempted to mention the Macro Race for the bottle of wine as I am 20+ ahead of Captain Trappings ..... but I won't.
