Took a chance on the rain and fired up two traps .....
A couple of spots fell and it turned out to be a warm humid night, ideal for mothing.

Persistent rain was good for the garden but not for the traps. At least it was warm rain, which is how you define summer in GB.
I took the cover off from one of the traps at 23.30 hrs and it stayed reasonably dry until the morning with a fair catch within.
No regular patrols, which is normally very productive, especially for early evening micros, so catch is down on the last few days.

SAINSBURY'S CATCH and VIEW
On my birthday, daughter Nikki and her husband Rupe bought me a kids bug catcher kit from Sainsbury's as a bit of a joke.
The plastic magnifier and tweezers are neither use nor ornament, but the bug viewing cage is ideal for raising larvae.
I haven't tried breeding any larvae through to adult stage yet, but now I will give it a go.
Ignore the brightly coloured plastic frame and you have a very serviceable unit indeed, with a handy door for replenishing food supplies and a large white mesh area to check out the progress of your nursery.
It even has a carry handle.
Ideal for those larger larvae.
At just £3.00 I will be purchasing a few more of these

25th June 2013 ... Neighbours beer niggle

Today I trimmed my privet hedge.
I also trimmed my neighbours adjoining hedge as he has emphycema and struggles a bit.
My reward for this task was a cool bottle of Wychwood Brewery "Goliath".
Full bodied with a nice blend of Goldings and Fuggles hops to give it an excellent bitter taste and at 4.2 per cent alc/vol, not too heavy. Very nice.
After I had drained the contents I idly looked at the bottle label and there was something familiar about it.
This niggled me for a while, but then the penny dropped ....

23rd June 2013 .... Mothing on hold ... New garden plant .. WELD

Not much happening moth-wise so I thought I would mention a new wildflower that appeared in the garden a while back.
It's Weld ... Reseda luteola
This one has grown to a little more than 2 metres high and is now in flower.
The flower spikes bear insignificant flowers but it is a magnificent plant all the same .....

The roots of this plant were used in pre medieval times to make a yellow dye (Woad was used for blue and Madder for red).
It was grown commercially on a large scale in Kent, Essex and Yorkshire until recent times, but it took 3 - 6 pounds of weld to dye 1 pound of cloth and gave way to more efficient chemical dyes, becoming a plant of wasteland, field edges, walls and limestone quarries.

Adaina microdactyla was a new garden species, a tiny plume moth with a 15mm wingspan.
The mothing is slowing down a little as the fresher air from the Atlantic pushes the humid air towards the continent, bringing wind and rain with it, but it may be warming up again after the weekend ... typical !
