Dotted Rustic

Not many moths about last night as the cold spell persists, well cold for the time of year that is.
Oddly enough, last July didn't fare much better temperature-wise.
Dotted Rustic was a welcome addition to The Dells garden list.
Talking to the Recorders today, I'm told 6 have been recorded this year right across the county, and the last records were in 2006.
2105 DOTTED RUSTIC, Rhyacia simulans
It is a large moth and when I saw it in the egg box this morning there was a brief moment when I thought it was a Large Yellow Underwing until I had a closer look.
The forewing is a little over 20mm.

ON THE micro scene.....
A few days ago I posted Pammene fasciana  as Cydia splendana
so here goes again.........
Cydia splendana * year first
I think it's correct this time .........

Small Talk

The last two nights have cooled down and it looks like the rain is returning for the forthcoming week.
Moth numbers are well down, with a predominance of Underwings and tired looking Uncertain types.
Nothing new for a couple of nights but still getting Small Ranunculus and round two of Toadflax Brocade.
Highlights from 27th/28th July:-

Small Ranunculus...locally common at The Dells garden

Small Emerald turn up in two's and three's

Small Blood-vein, another regular, haven't seen a big Blood-vein since 2010

Small Wainscot would have been nice, but this one is a Mere Wainscot.
A site first this year and this is my 5th...

My blog site namesake...... Campion

Another Dells speciality....Toadflax Brocade

Dusky Sallow

24th July ... Garden Traps...Padella dilemma

overnight low 13.2 deg, warmest night so far.
Macros were a little disappointing for such a warm, calm night, although the heavy dew would have killed it off in the early hours.
Plenty of them but read the last couple of blogs and there they are.
2, year-first and 1 new micro were recorded, with 12 more potted up for the county recorder.
1 adult 263 Lyonetia clerkella was a year first, although the apple, birch and cherry are riddled with the mines.
888 Mompha propinquella *year first (below)

425 Yponomeuta padella, Orchard Ermine is a new addition to The Dells list.
I have probably had this common moth before but the ground colour has been grey/white.
Y. malinellus, Apple Ermine, is also present in the garden and a grey/white form is possible.
The genitalia appears the same as padella.
Our micro man is happy to accept a uniform grey ground colour as padella......
Yponomeuta padella

11 deg overnight low, calm, DRY
Over 70 species recorded and this week is set to be the best for an age.

Here's a sample of last nights catch...

2293 Marbled Beauty Cryphia domestica year first

2425 Nut-tree Tussock Colocasia coryli year first

In absolute pristine condition....

2166 The Campion Hadena rivularis

1048 Garden Rose Tortrix Acleris variegana year first

20th July 2012 ... Quality beats quantity

Down to 8 deg last night, which is very cold for the time of year, although last July dropped to 7 at this time.
Numbers were well down in the traps, but a couple of quality macros arrived before it got too cold............

1637 Oak Eggar Lasiocampa quercus (female)

I was pleased to see Oak Eggar in the trap.
This beauty has turned up for the past 3 years now but only singletons (so far).
However, the one below has only made one previous visit, so even better .......

735 Ruddy Carpet Catarhoe rubidata

A great start to what looks like being an ideal week for the traps at last....
Some Olympic mothing ahead !

19th July 2012 .... Garden traps

Still dodging the showers but the weather-man is making the right noises about the week ahead....Don't hold your breath !
Nothing new on the macro scene last night but two very nice micros were added to The Dells garden year list .....

977 Large Fruit-tree Tortrix Archips podana (male)

1458 Thistle Ermine Myelois circumvoluta

Best of the macros was the third Lackey this year....

1634 The Lackey Malacosoma neustria
