Last night, almost three weeks later, I caught a "real" Common Rustic agg. and I am now convinced that the one from 25th June is NOT a C.R.agg.
Apart from the fact that I have never waited 3 weeks between my first and second, (they are very common and once they appear they just keep on coming) the shape is much different.

Now compare the haircuts ...... Top moth is the 25th June capture
PLEASE COMMENT
.... .... .... .... .... .... .... ...
Much cooler last night at 9 deg. with a distinct chill in the breeze.
Not much about apart from Scoparia pyralella which was new for the year, and the expected Rustic types. Even more Privet Hawks, a bumper year so far, and a pot full of Buff Ermine ......

Your Smoky Wainscot looks a bit Southernish?

DeleteThe best field mark for Southern W is the horizontal band across the front of the thorax (http://trappingsofsuccess.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Southern%20Wainscot ), the angle of this photo doesn't show this. Some Smoky W show dots along the fringe too, the dots on yours are pretty weak- look at this Smoky(http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?id=5673 ), also your moth doesn't seem to have any sign of falcated or even slightly sharp wing tips. To me, the photo is inconclusive........If pushed, I would call yours a Smoky. The Small Brindled Beauty on the otherhand is a shoe-in.
ReplyDeleteI've just completed an intense Wainscot course, with the advantage of seeing many more photos of the beasts in question that I have on file. There's a good info page on Leps.De ... It compares the 3 (common, smoky, southern) in some detail.
DeleteI won't put more photos on here but they are all Smokies. Luckily there are some underwing shots as well.
The shoe-in moth... I don't think you mean Small Brindled Beauty but I get the gist. I'll have a word with A&M and see if they will accept S.C.B.
In the meantime I'll remove Southern from my list until next week ^_*
Written after a day out at Trent Bridge- I'll get me coat.............
