22nd March '16 ... Garden Moth latest

It was going so well until the cloud cover disappeared, the temperature plumetted and the full moon lit up the garden at around 9 pm.
4 x Common Quaker and a Double-striped Pug were the only macro moths.
Amongst the 5 species of micro moths was a Caloptilia and I'm convinced it is "populetorum".
The small black dots along the leading edge of the forewing and the dark cilla fringe are diagnostic.
There are a couple of confusion species so this will require gendet to be absolutely sure.
If my ID is correct then this will be only the 3rd record for VC30 and the 2nd record was caught in my garden in 2014 at the same time of year.

Of the remaining micro catch there were 2 x Emmelina monodactyla, Epiphyas postvittana, Agonopterix heracliana and a year first Agonopterix alstromeriana

17th March ... Grey areas

10 Early Grey and a Grey Shoulder-knot were amongst a decent tally last night.
2 x Early Thorn made a nice change from Orthosia species
Common Wasp has been recorded in the trap on 16th and 17th so I'm turning over the egg boxes with a little more caution as I check contents.
A Comma was added to the butterfly year on Sunday.

12th March 2014 ... Garden Moth Traps latest

Not the best of conditions for moth trapping, the temperature was ok but clear skies and a bright waxing moon didn't help ... and then the fog arrived.
The early evening produced the first Small Quaker of the year and two Diurnea fagella appeared on the patio door window.
Agonopterix alstromeriana was found on the inside of the patio door window on the previous evening.
The county recorders, Andy and Melissa Banthorpe, inform me that the Pale Mottled Willow caught on the 9th March was the earliest record from VC30 and there are only 3 March records.

Still warm albeit windy, which possibly helps my garden tally with a few blow-ins.
Another good night in and around the traps with 33 moths of 13 species.
Caloptilia rufipennella was a good spot on the trap.
I'm wondering about the vernacular I've seen used for this moth ... Small Red Slender.
I'm all for a simple common vernacular, at least you wouldn't hear numerous pronunciations of Latin  for the majority of micro moths. (and wonder who is right).
Ideally there should be both Latin and vernacular in common usage, as in the macro moths. You can't go wrong with Small Red Slender, although it does imply that there is a bigger Red Slender on the loose, so why not just Red Slender ? Or is there a Red Slender that I haven't noticed ?
I'm sure I've said nothing here that hasn't been discussed several times in the past so here is last nights catch....

Overnight min. temp.... 8.1deg,  low cloud, fine drizzle or heavy mist.
14 moths of  9 species was a good return with a year first Agonopterix alstromeriana.
A record number of Satellite (4) was nothing compared to the 20+ in Bennyboymothmans garden trap !

Overnight min temps: 19th = 13.6 deg, windy
                                     20th = 12.3 deg, all night rain
Conditions were bad on 19th with gusting winds to 25mph but it was warm and a nice variety appeared although nothing new.
Last night, 20th, it rained all night so no traps were set, just the illuminated shed wall (1 x 15 watt actinic tube plus a 15 watt blacklight tube in the shed window).

Minimun overnight temperature; 12.6 deg
A warm, calm night with a hint of humidity raised the catch numbers.
100 plus macros were recorded with the bulk (40) being Shuttle-shaped Darts.
c50 micros.
A year first Copper Underwing agg. and two year first micros were added but just one worn Heart and Dart in the trap, which dominated the catch before the S-s Dart invasion.
