18th Sept 2014 ... Moth Traps catch list

A very warm evening, 16 deg with cloud cover and high humidity.
A sharp shower during the night soaked the egg boxes in the traps but there were some interesting moths present.
A year first Deep-brown Dart was a good find as they are scarce in my garden.

I've always had a soft spot for Hedgehogs, so I was thrilled to see 3 babies that had ventured forth from the compost heap for their first forage around the garden

All were returned to the nearby nest after the photo shoot and I will have to be careful where I tread for a few nights.

I've been keeping an eye out for the migrant Pearly Underwing, which are very similar to Turnip moth.
After checking out Tony Morris's blog, Mothing at the hidden house, a useful pic of the "punk mohican hairstyle" of a Pearly Underwing had been posted, so I have posted a Turnip Moth comparison from last nights catch .....

.....The other way to tell them apart is to check the hindwings but the hairdo seems to be  a good fieldmark.

A Deep-brown Dart was added to the year list.
This is a scarce moth in my garden with only one or two previous records.
The previous evening (21st) a Small Magpie, Eurrhypara hortulata, was a very late record, the flight period normally ends in July.

Garden Update

August in October...can't be bad.
Overnight temps around 12 deg min for the last few nights.
Highlights were... 28th, Buttoned Snout and a garden first Deep-brown Dart.

29th, Sallow and Mallow, 30th Angle Shades, Large Ranunculus and Lesser Yellow Underwing feeding on the Ivy flowers, Dark Chestnut, Spruce Carpet and Satellite.
