Garden Moths latest ... 2/10/15

The big super-moon has been a hindrance of late, add clear skies and it's a recipe for low moth counts.
Two moth species were added to the garden year list, Red-green Carpet and Yellow-line Quaker.
Red-green Carpet is normally seen in smaller numbers in the Spring around these parts but this years Spring was very poor compared to recent years.

August/September "brown" is gradually giving way to "yellow/orange" and I'm hoping to get a good selection of Sallows.
Centre-barred Sallow and Orange Sallow to date...

Red Underwing is still on my want list, but it's starting to look like a dipper this year which would be the only year it hasn't appeared in the garden.
Plutella xylostella, the Diamond-back Moth has had a good year in the garden and last night was no exception with 2 recorded ..

Only 1 trap on as the weather looked a bit dodgy. There was a chance of it passing just west of us but no ... soaked trap in the morning. Still warm though.
Yellow-line Quaker made it's expected appearance last night and hopefully Red-line Q will be hot on its heels as in the past.
Not much else about apart from the usual tired brown stuff, even the Blair's Shoulder-knot are starting to look a little worn .....

Wet but much warmer

A late, very worn, Yellow-line Quaker and a Light Brown Apple Moth were attracted to the lights in the shed windows.
Blacklights, actinic and a normal 36 watt fluorescent were all left blazing until midnight

Unsurprisingly, there was very little flying, but I'm still hoping to notch a garden first Mottled Umber, a Sprawler and December Moth to complete a good year.
If the weather doesn't make it impossible, as was the case last year with all the snow, I will leave a trap on throughout November and December.
I am hoping for a December Emmelina monodactyla, which would be a record for every month of the year for this plucky little moth.

21st oct. Warmer early until the cloud cleared to lower temps and reveal a big bright full moon. BUT 6 Blair's Shoulder-knot braved it

Also a Black Rustic last night, hopefully the weather will hit a late warm spell.

14th,15th & 16th Oct....Landmark reached

Temperatures have been falling over the last three days and 3.6deg C was recorded at 11.45 last night. My 200th macro moth species was recorded on the 15th in the shape of a YELLOW-LINE QUAKER and despite the low temperature last night, a garden "first" was recorded on the illuminated shed wall, a LARGE WAINSCOT.
The lines shown on the pics are from a lined notebook. I do this to give an idea of size, the lines being 8mm apart.

Only 3 moths recorded last night (16th) in the near frosty conditions. One being this plucky little micro a WHITE-SHOULDERED HOUSE-MOTH

This micro appeared on the 15th just before the rain. According to "Mr. Micro", our esteemed VC micro recorder, it is highly probably Acleris hastiana, which along with A. cristana are the most polymorphic of all the UK species with many variations and intermediates. SO, I think I will record this as

another species that beat the rain was this SATELLITE. Not a year first as I had one on Feb 4th.

My 200th macro on the 15th turned up sometime after the rain had cleared...

SINGLE YELLOW LINE 23/11/09

A bit of a lull in the strong winds of late produced a single Yellow-line Quaker. This is a garden first for me and most welcome after a barren few days.

STOP PRESS: This may not be a Yellow-line Quaker. I'm leaning more towards Brick after a closer inspection.
