Cold easterlies are affecting us right now and the air has a distinct chilly feel to it.

.... TREAT ... after 3 nights of absolute zero we get a warmer overcast night and moths.
Two traps running plus 1 illuminated pumpkin trap. LED/ 2 candle power
No Halloween moths ... ie Ghost, Deaths Head, (you get the drift).
However, the pumpkin lights attracted a  few Cloaked Minors during the course of the evening, feeding on a variety of confectionery before departing.

Traps under cover.

Almost an inch of rain fell last night but I've learned from the past that the moths around here just seem to carry on.
The warm night prompted me to fire up both traps and it never ceases to amaze me how so many end up in the covered traps (with limited light output) in heavy rain.
Last year I chopped down my leylandii trees (good riddance) and wondered how the Blair's Shoulder-knot would fare.
No problem.... 7 in the traps last night !

A chilly 4 deg and a bright moon kept moth numbers down, the highlight being a year first Blair's Shoulder-knot.

11/11/11....Migrants

Overnight min temp. 10.1 deg...20mph gusts, drizzle and rain from 11pm until midnightish.
Thursdays very bright full moon resulted in a blank for the traps, but last night was a different story.
No sign of the moon, heavily overcast and apart from an hour of rain it was a good night.
13 moths of 11 species were recorded.
Also another garden first was added to The Dells species list, not from the traps but from a phone call.
I sent an unidentified moth to the recorders that had been refridgerated since 15th september.
After a gen det it turned out to be a male Garden Dart which brings the 2011 macro total to a tantalising 249 species. Thanks to Andy and Melissa Banthorpe, whose help over the last 3 years has been invaluable.

overnight min temp...6.8 deg, strong wind, showers, heavy at times.
Had to cover the traps as the rain was coming in at 45 degrees on the strong wind.
Put them back on at midnight, with clearing skies and temperatures plummeting so the count was well down.
No immigrant moths as yet following the week of warm southerlies.

17th Sept 2011....400 mark passed

Min overnight temp:- a chilly 5.8 deg.
Windy with thundery heavy showers early, then easing with clear skies and plummeting temperatures.
I left my traps to the mercy of the elements and headed for Captain Trappings domicile to eat vast amounts of Indian cuisine and to quaff red wine.
The result was soaking wet traps and an I don't care attitude.
Checked the soggy egg boxes this morning and was a little surprised to find my 400th species for the garden, 2011, a Barred Sallow.
An added bonus was a year first Blair's Shoulder-knot.

5th Nov.... The Last Straw (Scarce Bordered that is)

Two nights of near gale force winds followed by a calm night with constant rain ! Not the best conditions for trapping. But I persisted with the garden traps and was rewarded with this Scarce Bordered Straw. A garden "first" ?.........No, I had one last year at the same time under the same conditions and the trap had 20mm of water sloshing around in it. So it would seem that birding and mothing are both good for wayward immigrants after a couple of good windy days in the right direction at the right time of year. Thanks to Andy, VC 30 recorder for the home visit and ID confirmation and thanks to Matt (of trappingsofsuccess blog) for his invaluable ID input.
