It's been a very slow year with moth numbers well down on last year.

10 deg. C and raining, that's August for you, two days before it was 31 deg during the day, then down to 16 today,

Just a few days ago I recorded a county first macro for VC30.
Sharp-angled Peacock.
Well last night I trapped a similar Peacock, so it's eyes down for Dusky Peacock for the hat trick.
It's a bit late in the day for Dusky and they are mega rare in this area although it could be a good migrant year and one has been recorded in nearby Hertfordshire.

21st June 2014 ... Scorchio !

On the night of 20th I manned the traps for an hour and a half to pot up every micro moth in sight !
The result was 89 moths of 45 species with 2 new for site and a few year firsts to add to the list.
Last night saw very similar weather conditions but even warmer by just 1 degree, but I had company and didn't check the traps until this morning.
The result was 57 moths of 20 species, so it pays dividends to man the traps if you want to increase your micro haul.
Even so, I added a couple more micros to the garden year list ...

Both species confirmed.
After wondering where the Sallow Kittens were, two turned up last night.
A Mottled Beauty was found amongst the Willow Beautys and the highlight of the night, Scorched Wing, which are few and far between in the garden.

11th June 2014 .. Garden Moth Traps update

A full moon with litle or no cloud cover, but still warm and humid.
Not the ideal conditions but I still recorded 7 more species for the annual garden year list/ wine race.
Heart and Darts filled the traps with a high count of 38, add to that 3 Privet Hawk-moths and there was little room for anything else.
A massive Hornet was removed from one of the traps, quickly followed by another which was also gingerly removed before it decimated half of the trap contents.
A Maidens Blush flew out of the top trap, straight into a spider web, unfortunately the spider got the bite in before I could release it and it succombed shortly after.
