8th Aug ... Latest garden moths ...

The garden traps are heaving with rubbish at the moment.
Large Yellow, Lesser Yellow, Broad-bordered Yellow and Lesser B-b Yellow Underwings.
Shuttle-shaped Darts that you weigh instead of counting, Common Rustics too, Turnip Moths, and lately, Square-spot Rustics, Flounced Rustic with the odd Copper Underwing.
This is known as "Brown Stuff", and each morning you sift through it hoping for something different.
Fortunately, this often happens, one moth will stand out and it's usually a good one ... Tree-lichen Beauty for instance, Lunar-spotted Pinion and Twin-spotted Wainscot were three examples that made the morning check worthwhile ......
It has been correctly pointed out that the Pinion is Lesser-spotted, not Lunar-spotted. The pale round patch at mid forewing, with the small black dot in the centre is not present on Lunar and the paler colour clinches it.
So that completes the Cosmia set of four. Thanks Matt Burgess for pointing this out.

22nd July 2014 ... Plain sailing ...

Plain Pug has been around in numbers of late and thanks to the moth'ers who have been posting their pics, it made it easy to recognise my very first garden Plain Pug.

Lots of brown stuff in the traps that I have stopped counting for a while.
Shuttle-shaped Darts, Common Rustic aggs, Dark Arches, Yellow Underwings with Copper and Straw Underwings.
Instead I have just jotted down a selection with the emphasis on newcomers and the uncommon.

20th July 2014 ... Likin' the lichen

Still hectic around the garden traps as temperatures remain high.
There has been a huge influx of Diamond-back moths over the last few days with 10+ recorded for the last 4 nights, and that is a conservative estimate.
Another migrant from last night was a Tree-lichen Beauty, attracted to the 15watt BLB on the shed wall, one to look out for....

It's been a lazy week recording-wise as there have been too many moths to deal with so I've just "cherry picked" a few each evening, mainly new moths for the garden year, plus a few.

On the 18th it was again warm and sultry with a brief but heavy shower.
4 micros were added to the garden list and many more were potted up for our county micro recorder to identify....

7th Aug 2013 ... Nothing new

A bit chilly at 8 deg last night, still lots of brown things in the trap.
Nothing new recorded but two Canary-shouldered Thorn were nice, only singletons in the past,  and a second Tree-lichen Beauty in my garden within a week.. There must be hundreds of them around this year.

I'm waiting for a reply from our County recorders, holidaying in Wales or MonMOTHshire (suit yourself !) but this could be only the 3rd county record for Tree-lichen Beauty
A Dark Sword-grass and an increase in Silver Y moths indicates that a look-out for an exotic migrant might be on the cards given the current warm southerlies.
