16th Oct 2014 ... "Green Stuff"

Above ... Merveille de la Nuit would be a more appropriate name for this beautiful moth ... always a thrill to see in the autumn moth trap.
--------------------------
Last night was overcast and much warmer with warm air being pulled in from the Azores, enjoy it while it lasts.
The forecasted rain during the night missed Biggleswade and the night was pleasantly warm.
31 moths of 17 species was a good return compared to the last couple of weeks.
Both Sallow and Mallow were rescued from the numerous Garden Orb spider webs around the garden.
So far it's been a poor year for Sallow species in my garden with only Centre-barred, Barred and The Sallow recorded in low numbers.
The normally annual Pink-barred and Dusky Lemon Sallow have not yet been recorded this year although there is still time, and Pale Lemon Sallow has turned up in the past.
Diamond-back Moth has had a big year with another two seen on the trap perspex.
Of the "green stuff" ... Red-green Carpet was last seen in spring until last night, Green-brindled Crescent and Merveille du Jour were both new for 2014
Great Diving Beetles are on the move and occasionally turn up in the traps and I normally drop them in the small garden pond, but not this time as I have many Goldfish fry in there, I know Halloween is approaching but ........

2nd/3rd Oct 2013 ... A few late moths, a computer glitch, nostalgia and David Mannings' bicycle

For some reason I can't update the WINE RACE or edit profiles.
Well I can edit, but as soon as I hit the "save" button, I get "javascript void (0)" appear and it won't update.
Don't know why this has started happening as I am "the last of the good old fashioned steam powered trains" (line from a Kinks song) and the first of the National Health (R.I.P.) babies, computers are not really my bag man.
A sudden wave of nostalgia and regret has swept over me ....
Below, the humble Farthing ...

.... this Farthing was minted in my birth year, notice the quality, and also notice the design.
Much better than todays complicated whirls and swirls that you need to "google" to find out what they represent.
A simple Wren, tasteful and instantly recognisable AND no need to pay some arty farty designer  thousands of (taxpayers) pounds for some obscure artistic regional representation.
Design and quality of todays coins are sadly lacking.
Speaking of quality ....
Below, David Mannings' bicycle, still in pristine condition ...

Anyway, back to the moths
2nd Oct
A late 2nd generation Least Carpet turned up on the trap, the second one recorded this autumn.
Mallow and Barred Sallow may have been a return visit of the moths recorded the previous evening.

17th Sept 2011....400 mark passed

Min overnight temp:- a chilly 5.8 deg.
Windy with thundery heavy showers early, then easing with clear skies and plummeting temperatures.
I left my traps to the mercy of the elements and headed for Captain Trappings domicile to eat vast amounts of Indian cuisine and to quaff red wine.
The result was soaking wet traps and an I don't care attitude.
Checked the soggy egg boxes this morning and was a little surprised to find my 400th species for the garden, 2011, a Barred Sallow.
An added bonus was a year first Blair's Shoulder-knot.

BARRED SALLOW

BLAIR'S SHOULDER-KNOT
Others include Treble-bar and two Large Ranunculus accompanied by the usual Underwings, SSDarts, S.H. Characters. Square-spot and Vine's Rustics.
Very little on the micro front with just 3 x  A. geniculea
