16th July 2016 .... Small Waves

Having caught 3 small wave species in the traps I thought a comparison shot might be good for beginners.
If you think herding cats is difficult, try herding moths without the aid of a blast or two of CO2.
I got there in the end after much coaxing and cussing ...

18th June 2014 ... Garden Traps latest

The June weather is in the doldrums at the mo, with daytime temps 19 or 20 and nights 11 or 12.
It seems to have been like this for ages, but it's not bad for the moths even though the light breezes have a Northerly bias and a fresh feel.
5 more species made it on to the year list last night ....

Large Yellow Underwings are increasing in number, as are Mottled Rustic, Uncertain, Heart and Club, Dark Arches.
The so called grass veneer moths and Common Footman are also on the up.

7th July 2013 ... The latest "Best night of the year so far"

The day kicked off on the right note with a new butterfly for the garden, a Marbled White.
The warmest evening of the year to date produced 3 new moths for the garden all time list.
Two traps operating and a blacklight 15w BLB on the shed wall.

A few more newcomers for the year were recorded last night, Dot Moth, Double Square-spot, Elephant Hawk-moth, Bordered Pug, Dwarf Cream Wave, Middle-barred Minor, Toadflax Pug and Least Carpet.
Epiblema uddmanniana was the latest micro....is it still an Epiblema ? The new micro book has thrown me a bit !
Just checked..... it has become a Notocelia.

13th June 2011....Latest garden moths

91 moths of 36 species was a good return, and tonight looks even better weatherwise.
The moon is just about full, but it stays low in the sky and only briefly shines in my garden this time of year before disappearing behind the houses.
2 additions for 2011 were trapped.
