Most moth-ers would rather trap in calm conditions, but here in The Dells garden the wind is welcome if it blows from SW to SE, although maybe not quite as severe as it was last night.
Last nights catch was encouraging ...

Just half a nights trapping tonight as I have to be at the hospital early in the morning.
One new for year moth, Garden Pebble, Evergestis forficalis.
4 pugs, at least 3 Common and one I'm not so sure about ...

... could be Common or maybe White Spotted ?

4th June 2013 ... Privet Hawk-moth cleared for landing

The first Privet Hawk-moth of the year crash landed into the trap last night, they really are massive !
Rather windy and cool, the wind chill is due to the temperature of the North Sea, which is well below the seasonal average. This is because of the very cold March.
The wind is coming from the North and it is being chilled by the sea temperature, so a southerly biased wind will give us warmer nights if we ever get one !
A good selection of moths were recorded last night, adding 7 to my year list but the micro moths are still thin on the ground.....

I have declared war on these little varmints.
I am determined to see my Day Lilies intact, so removal and disposal* on a regular basis is the plan.
*  (disposal means my neighbour gets more than he should, if you know what I mean !)

I was pleased to see Toadflax Brocade turn up again....none recorded up until last year when half a dozen or so appeared in the garden, but no sign of the food plant, which is probably in one of the adjacent gardens.

It wasn't as good as the previous evening but I still managed to add 1 macro and 2 more micros to the garden tally.
I noticed that "Stewart of the North" caught a Heart & Dart so I guess the traps will soon be infested with them for several weeks, it's nice to see the first one tho...and then it's the Rustic/uncertain/do your head in Moths to follow !
BRIMSTONE MOTH 1906...I have had 15 of these in the last three nights and although they are common they are still a cracking moth

A new micro...EPHESTIA PARASITELLA ssp UNICOLORELLA 1474.....The nominate species is from Southern Europe and the sub species Unicolorella is the only one found in Britain (Thanks to our micro recorder for the ID and info)

12th June........Ticking along nicely

Last nights better weather saw 100 moths of 40 species in and around the traps. While Shuttle-shaped Darts have tailed off, Heart & Dart are now my most numerous visitor by a long chalk, and the "Kamikaze" Large Yellow Underwings are starting to dive-bomb both me and my traps.
