June 18th ... Garden moth traps latest..

Cooler and fresher without the cloud cover of the last few nights.
Fewer moths but still a nice selection and 5 more macro moths for the year list.
The micro moth numbers took a dip in the fresher weather, they prefer warm, humid nights.

8th June 2013 ... Toadflax Brocade

Two more Toadflax Brocades brightened up an otherwise uneventful night for the garden traps.
This Red Data Book species has been a regular for 3 years.

As a resident species, this moth is restricted to the south-east and central southern coasts of England, where it frequents mainly shingle beaches. It is a relatively recent colonist, arriving around 1950 and quickly gaining a foothold, but appears to be now in decline again.
--- UK Moths
It's certainly not in decline in my little square of  Bedfordshire at present so maybe this neat little moth will become firmly established across the country......

28th May 2013 ... Grey Areas

The unexpected break in the rain couldn't have come at a better time.
Heavily overcast and holding at 10 degrees all night with just the lightest of drizzly rain on occasions.
The Grey moths put in an appearance with Sycamore, Poplar Grey and Grey Dagger (agg)

Another grey area, is separating The Uncertain, The Rustic and Vine's Rustic, moreso around late june when they are all abundant.
The two examples caught last night ( below ) are Vine's Rustic and show a variation in background colour....... but in a couple of weeks time or so Uncertains and Rustics will be heading for a trap near you.

21st June 2012 ... Poplar Front

Another weather front has arrived with rain and wind after teasing us with a couple of days of seasonal June conditions.
Of the few moths trapped, two were added to the macro tally for the year, Poplar Grey and Heart and Club.

Poplar Grey, Acronicta megacephala

Heart & Club, Agrotis clavis
I have added 4 new micro species to the garden list courtesy of David Manning, Beds. micro recorder, who recently collected lots of little pots from my freezer.

13th June 2011....Latest garden moths

91 moths of 36 species was a good return, and tonight looks even better weatherwise.
The moon is just about full, but it stays low in the sky and only briefly shines in my garden this time of year before disappearing behind the houses.
2 additions for 2011 were trapped.
