Oct 4th 2015, Garden Traps report

Two more "newbies" for 2015
Brown-spot Pinion and Pink-barred Sallow. These common species are quite rare in my garden and I missed out on both of them last year.
Brown-spot Pinion
Pink-barred Sallow
A Common Wainscot, Common Marbled Carpet, two Large Ranunculus and two Spruce Carpet were also present along with the usual Lunar Underwing's, Black Rustic's, Blair's Shoulder-knot and the late Summer/early Autumn hangers on.

On the lookout for a Merveille du Jour now and a garden first Autumnal Rustic would be a nice find

Brrr ! It's June, so they say.

8th June 2015
The dire June weather seems to be deteriorating.
It is 22.50 hrs and I have just checked the two traps, jumper and coat on, it's 8 deg C and dropping, but feels more like 4 or 5 with a bitter NE breeze chilling it's way across the cold North Sea to the western reaches of East Anglia.
Absolute zero ... not the temperature but the moth count, so I hope there may be a few lurking in the egg boxes in the morning.
I'll probably find a few sitting around the lamps trying to keep warm !
Back in a few hours .........................

The temperature eventually bottomed out at 5.5 deg C and 19 hardy souls were found huddling in the egg boxes like winter tramps along the Thames embankment under their cardboard domiciles.
No micros were recorded which is very unusual for this time of year.

Not a good forecast for tonight either, more of the same, cold NE breeze and single figure temperatures.

Search for Buff October ...

In the trap last night, 14th Oct ....

A Buff Ermine, probably late or is it really early ! Almost certainly the latest VC30 record.
Either way, with the partial view I got when I looked in the trap my first thoughts were of Ben Sale and Britains first Fall Webworm, hoping it was Britains 2nd until I got a look at it.
Still, a Buff Ermine on October 14th must be a lot rarer than all of the autumn moths I've dipped out on lately :(
Last nights catch:-
Plutella xylostella, 1
Blastobasis lacticolella, 1
Epiphyas postvittana, 4

A very warm evening, 16 deg with cloud cover and high humidity.
A sharp shower during the night soaked the egg boxes in the traps but there were some interesting moths present.
A year first Deep-brown Dart was a good find as they are scarce in my garden.

16th June 2013 ... Cockroach Moth is back !

My least favourite moth is on the wing. It crashed into my trap last night, blundering its way through the egg boxes, unsettling the contents in the process.
Unfortunately it is the first of hundreds, in fact I recorded 99 of these despicable creatures in one evening in a previous life. On a brighter note, the local sparrows like them for breakfast, so any that are hiding around the trap vicinity ......... Large Yellow Underwing ... year first.
